Class assignments for Thursday 2/14/08

For class Thursday, everyone should be presenting their first draft of the remake of the SUNY Potsdam site.

Readings (Just review for now, you don’t have to go into too much depth, we’ll cover all in class)

Beautiful forms

Principals of effective web design

Basic guide to CSS
(older but still valid)

I do have office hours on Thursday at Dunn in the computer lab, if you have any questions on the first assignment.

Review of Jasons presentation last nite

Wow, that was an amazing lecture by Jason. I hope everyone in the class downloads his program and gives it a try.

At this point everyone should have done their first phase of the new mockup for the SUNY home page in Photoshop. We’ll be presenting those on Thursday. This will be an ongoing project all semester, you’ll use that as a framework for mastering advanced web development.

Please put some work into that first mockup. After this, the class will move VERY RAPIDLY and you should be prepared to to handle a fair amount of coding. I will put up 3 reading assignments on Monday.

For our next class we will be covering:

CSS, Javacript, and THE GRID.

Updates for class 2/7/08

UPDATE!  Trying to aim for 6:45 at Saterlee 300 for my class, OR If you can go with Tony’s group from Dunn 300. Thanks, ed!

********EVENT********
IDEA Game Design Lecture at Clarkson University
“The Game Design of Art” a Presentation by Jason Rohrer
Clarkson University
7:30pm on Thursday, February 7th in CAMP 176
Event is Free

MAP HERE (Building 5)

Jason Rohrer, a video game designer living in Potsdam, will present his observations from the front lines of the ‘games as art’ debate, with the goal of inspiring game developers, artists and players alike to change their perceptions of games as a capable art form.

Mr. Rohrer’s work has continued to change the definition of video games, pushing the medium toward new frontiers by exploring subtle aspects of the human condition. His most recent release, “Passage,” has seen 60,000 downloads in its first two months and has been hailed as revolutionary by dozens of journalists: “The ‘games as art’ debate is officially over.” — Reverend Anthony, Destructoid.com

“One of the most emotional video games I’ve ever played.” – David Jaffe, “God of War” creator.

The Wall Street Journal’s extensive review of “Passage” can be found here: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120034796455789469.html
This event is co-sponsored by Clarkson University’s IDEA Club (Interactive Digital Entertainment & Arts Club) and the newly developed Digital Arts & Sciences Major (which utilizes the important balance between both the artistic and scientific aspects of technology in our society).

>>Thanks for sending this on.  We have plans to leave Dunn Hall for Clarkson at 7:00 p.m. (we’re gathering at 6:45) tomorrow night for the talk.  We’ll have >>about 15-20 ICT students going.  If you’d like you could “gather” with us and head out together.

Hello everyone. Like to get this blog rocking and rolling. Everyone should be posting at least a link or two to the site. For Thursday you should have completed assignments as outline.

1. Cut up the SUNY home page, bring to class in a plastic zip loc type bag.
2. Do a Photshop layout of the site
3. The reading

We’ll also talk about RSS feeds to the site, so when we do have an update, you will get an AUTOMATIC email.

For class on Thursday we have a FIELD trip! Please make it to class 10 minute early. Bring assignments, and we’ll be heading to Clarkson to see a world famous web/internet/game designer speak.
